Annapolis, Maryland and the National Mall

By on Jun 3, 2019 in Adventure & Travel | 0 comments

Monday, April 29~ RJ worked for a few hours in the morning at our Airbnb and then we drove 40 miles to Annapolis, Maryland in the afternoon.  Annapolis is a CUTE little city and the State House is situated in the middle of the State Circle with cute little shops, houses and restaurants surrounding it. You can see the Chesapeake Bay a couple blocks away and smell the ocean air.  We walk in and there’s a sign that says: I had forgotten my ID back at the Airbnb and RJ left his in the back case on the bike. I thought they weren’t going to let us through security without my ID and the afternoon trip would be for nothing. But then they said if RJ had his we would be ok. So RJ ran back out to the bike to get his ID.  This capitol is right up there as one the cutest capitol we have been to so far. It’s on the small side as far as capitol buildings go with beautiful grounds and full of rich...

Charleston, West Virginia

Sunday, April 28– We packed up and drove the short distance to Charleston. The dome of the capitol is so tall, we could see it before we got off the freeway. In fact, the state capitol is the tallest building in West Virginia.  It overlooks the banks of the Kanawha River. We parked close to the water and headed inside. Well, we tried to. We walked half way around the building, trying five different entrances before finding a door that was open. The capitol is a massive structure with two long wings on the east and west side connecting the main building. It was easy to get lost inside. The rotunda was under major construction on the inside and outside so we couldn’t see any of it. That was a bummer because the rotunda is usually the most beautiful part of the capitols. The House and Senate chambers were locked as well. And, because it was a Sunday, the information desk was closed...

Frankfort, Kentucky

–Saturday, April 27– We woke up with a start, RJ having remembered there was a time change half way through Kentucky and we needed to leave RIGHT NOW if we were going to make it to the capitol before it closed. We had less than a 30 minute buffer.  I scrambled around, stuffing everything into our saddle bags. We threw on our gear and made a bee line to Frankfort.  We made up time by taking the freeway, the fastest route, which is also the most boring but we had 20 minutes to spare by the time we screeched into the parking lot in Frankfort several hours later.  The capitol building was beautiful and void of anyone except the security guard and the receptionist. We took a hurried little tour. The House and Senate doors were closed but we were able to peak in the windows.  There wasn’t a gift shop but the lady at the front desk told us to check out a chocolate store down the...

Time in Kansas and the Missouri Capitol

By on May 13, 2019 in Adventure & Travel | 0 comments

Monday, April 22 – Thursday, April 25 We spent the next four days at my grandparent’s house. We ladies found all kinds of things to keep busy with while Grandpa and RJ were working. I had a great time galavanting around town and the country side with Grandma and Maria in the van. We set a puzzle, played card games and ate out a couple times. I got to see a lot of my old school friends so that was really awesome. We packed up and left Grandpa’s Thursday evening after supper. RJ had been route planning earlier that day and figured out that we could be home close to two weeks earlier if we got a bit of a head start. With the weekend hours or lack there of for some capitol buildings, it’s tricky trying to plan the route and make sure we get everywhere we need to be in the right amount of time. So I quickly did a load of wash and packed everything up that afternoon....

Heading East

By on May 8, 2019 in Adventure & Travel | 0 comments

We’ve been waiting for this last big trip for quite a few months now, and we are finally on our way. We had planned on leaving last September but decided it would be too hot and humid and we had also been given the opportunity to live in New York City for 2 months. So we postponed the trip to the end of April. And now, here we are, on the road, happy to be back on the bike but we also have sore butts from a few long days on the bike. We spent several weeks preparing for this trip, looking up different routes, planning around the donkey giving birth, making sure it wasn’t snowing, and setting up the tent in the living room along with all of our gear to make sure we were set for the trip.  After a few Amazon purchases, a faux pack, a trip down to Chico to service the bike, and a couple arguments that had to do with procrastinating about saving the route planning until the night...

RJ and Em Life Update: New York, the Camp Fire, and a Kitchen Remodel

By on Apr 30, 2019 in Life | 2 comments

Hi friends! Em here. Our blog has been dark for quite awhile. But here I am to post an update on life and what’s been happening the past half a year or so. Our posts stopped in the middle of our last trip to Alaska. I hope to one day finish writing about our Alaska trip in the near future as that was one of our favorite trips we have taken and the most beautiful pictures. But first, a little about what’s been happening with us since we last blogged. We got back from Alaska at the end of June and spent the summer wake surfing and soaking up the sun. The end of August we packed our suitcases and flew to New York City. Bighead Technology is working for a company based in NYC and wanted to know if RJ could fly out to work in the office. So, off we went to the Big Apple. RJ spent a majority of the time at the office while I sought out good coffee shops, rode the subway to random stops, and...

Alaska – Day 10 – Tok, Alaska

By on Jul 18, 2018 in Adventure & Travel | 1 comment

*This is the story of our journey from Whitehorse, YT to Tok, AK.* We got started that day at a decent hour, not too late and not too early. Pack up didn’t take too long which was nice. Our neighbors next to us were an older couple and the man would periodically come around and ask us questions about our trip and what we were doing. Turns out, he and his wife used to take trips like this when they were younger, and it brought back a lot of great memories for him. We ended up talking for about 15 minutes or so sharing stories of previous expeditions.  We both were on our way to the Arctic Ocean, except they were headed to Tuktoyaktuk and we were headed to Prudhoe Bay. A short aside: Em and I have talked about how neat it is that we can easily connect with the older generation. A lot of the older couples or individuals we meet usually have one of two responses when learning about...

Alaska – Day 9 – Whitehorse, Yukon Territory

By on Jul 5, 2018 in Adventure & Travel | 2 comments

*This is the story of our journey from Liard Hot Springs to Whitehorse, Yukon.* We woke up at a decent hour, but the sun was well into the sky by the time we were up. As we started to pack up, I couldn’t help but notice that our camping neighbor was up, and considering that he also had an adventure bike, I had no choice but to start talking with him to find out about his journey. Thirty minutes later and I was still learning about this guy and his life and where he was headed. He came down from Alaska and this was his first time taking a big trip on his adventure bike. I don’t remember all of the details that he shared, but he didn’t spare many and was friendly nonetheless. Didn’t hurt that the longer he talked, the more time it gave Emmy to pack everything up :p. Our conversation got cut short because it came time for me to actually help Emmy pack up, but...
