Alaska – Day 10 – Tok, Alaska

By on Jul 18, 2018 in Adventure & Travel | 1 comment

*This is the story of our journey from Whitehorse, YT to Tok, AK.* We got started that day at a decent hour, not too late and not too early. Pack up didn’t take too long which was nice. Our neighbors next to us were an older couple and the man would periodically come around and ask us questions about our trip and what we were doing. Turns out, he and his wife used to take trips like this when they were younger, and it brought back a lot of great memories for him. We ended up talking for about 15 minutes or so sharing stories of previous expeditions.  We both were on our way to the Arctic Ocean, except they were headed to Tuktoyaktuk and we were headed to Prudhoe Bay. A short aside: Em and I have talked about how neat it is that we can easily connect with the older generation. A lot of the older couples or individuals we meet usually have one of two responses when learning about...

Alaska – Day 9 – Whitehorse, Yukon Territory

*This is the story of our journey from Liard Hot Springs to Whitehorse, Yukon.* We woke up at a decent hour, but the sun was well into the sky by the time we were up. As we started to pack up, I couldn’t help but notice that our camping neighbor was up, and considering that he also had an adventure bike, I had no choice but to start talking with him to find out about his journey. Thirty minutes later and I was still learning about this guy and his life and where he was headed. He came down from Alaska and this was his first time taking a big trip on his adventure bike. I don’t remember all of the details that he shared, but he didn’t spare many and was friendly nonetheless. Didn’t hurt that the longer he talked, the more time it gave Emmy to pack everything up :p. Our conversation got cut short because it came time for me to actually help Emmy pack up, but...

Alaska – Day 8 – Liard River Hot Springs, BC

*This is the story of our journey from Fort St John BC, to Liard Hot Springs BC.* We woke up around 7; Emmy packed up while I worked for the morning. We ended up leaving Uncle Tim’s place around 11am for Fort Nelson. This part of the highway was much nicer than that south of Fort St John. It was just a two lane highway amongst the forest and hills. It didn’t hurt that the weather was just perfect hovering around 60 degrees and sunny as could be. I was enjoying the balmy weather and left my jacket cufflinks open to soak up all that cool air into my jacket. Not 30 minutes later do I feel a bug fly into my right hand jacket arm and then something sting me! I quickly clenched my bicep where I got hit, to try and squish whatever got me, but I could tell whatever was there was still kicking around. I pull over at the next turnout, rip off my jacket like a mad man and sure enough...

Alaska – Days 5-7 – Our Stay With the Smith’s

This is the our stay at the Smith’s before we continued to Alaska. We stayed a total of 4 nights at Uncle Tim and Aunt Roz’s, and we had the *best* time. I was able to catch up on a lot of needed work and also got to do some fun things with the family. On Tuesday, Em went and saw a movie with the family and apparently Uncle Tim thought they were all going to die before they even made it to the movie theater because Aunt Roz was driving like a speed demon. And the movie must have been pretty funny because they all came back in high spirits laughing about their favorite parts. Wednesday, Uncle Tim took us all out on their river boat on the Peace River. I had never been on a river boat before, and it was so so much fun. Apparently, it wasn’t the best season for river boating because the river was running so high, but we still had a ton of fun. We explored the river some...

Alaska – Day 3, Part 2 – Jasper/Hinton, Alberta

This is part 2 of our journey from Kelowna, BC to Jasper/Hinton, AB We were finally back on the road around 1pm or so after the Bell store debacle. We still had ~9 hours of driving, so we needed to book it lest we’d get into camp after midnight. The road was very scenic along the river and through the mountains. One of the funnest things about the initial part of the drive were the waterfalls right along the road! We could always tell when one of those roadside falls were coming up because the temperature would drop suddenly, and we’d freeze our rumps off.  However, I think we both agreed it was worth the freeze. Several hours in, we stopped at a gas station to fill up and take a quick break for a late lunch. There was a section of grass with benches outside the nearby Tim Hortons which was perfect for Emmy to cook some PoRitos (Potato-Burritos). After lunch, we headed into...
