Heading East

We’ve been waiting for this last big trip for quite a few months now, and we are finally on our way. We had planned on leaving last September but decided it would be too hot and humid and we had also been given the opportunity to live in New York City for 2 months. So we postponed the trip to the end of April. And now, here we are, on the road, happy to be back on the bike but we also have sore butts from a few long days on the bike. We spent several weeks preparing for this trip, looking up different routes, planning around the donkey giving birth, making sure it wasn’t snowing, and setting up the tent in the living room along with all of our gear to make sure we were set for the trip.  After a few Amazon purchases, a faux pack, a trip down to Chico to service the bike, and a couple arguments that had to do with procrastinating about saving the route planning until the night...

RJ and Em Life Update: New York, the Camp Fire, and a Kitchen Remodel

Hi friends! Em here. Our blog has been dark for quite awhile. But here I am to post an update on life and what’s been happening the past half a year or so. Our posts stopped in the middle of our last trip to Alaska. I hope to one day finish writing about our Alaska trip in the near future as that was one of our favorite trips we have taken and the most beautiful pictures. But first, a little about what’s been happening with us since we last blogged. We got back from Alaska at the end of June and spent the summer wake surfing and soaking up the sun. The end of August we packed our suitcases and flew to New York City. Bighead Technology is working for a company based in NYC and wanted to know if RJ could fly out to work in the office. So, off we went to the Big Apple. RJ spent a majority of the time at the office while I sought out good coffee shops, rode the subway to random stops, and...

Alaska – Day 4 – Fort St. John, British Columbia

This is our adventure from Hinton KOA, Alberta to Fort St. John, British Columbia. RJ: It seemed like we had hardly laid our heads on our pillows when it was time to start another day on the bike. It was a beautiful sunny morning; perfect riding weather. We opted to take showers before heading off which ended up being well needed and quite refreshing since we had been on the road for several days. Consequently, we found out that the *one* towel we brought along wasn’t quite as practical or convenient as we previously thought. Shout out to Emmy for being a trooper and letting me use it first. Feeling refreshed, we packed up the tent and took off on our way to Fort St. John.  The road we took was marked as the “Scenic” route to Alaska, but we couldn’t help but laugh because it was chump change compared to the previous day of riding. Not to mention, the road was in...

St. Paul, Minnesota

The capitol grounds were sprawling from one end of the street to the next. We walked in the building to a grand staircase in front of us. The inside was beautiful, with intricate paintings on the ceilings and walls. The rotunda was grand with large archways lining the halls. We peered through the gates at the Senate and House chambers… …and stopped at the visitor’s center for our stamp before exiting the building to search for a Minnesota coffee mug. FAST FACTS about Minnesota: Although Minesota is known as the “Land of 10,000 Lakes” it really has close to 12,000 lakes. The largest shopping mall in the US, the Mall of America is located in Bloomington, MN. It has a theme park, movie theater, zip lines, over 500 stores, an aquarium, a wedding chapel, 20,000 parking spaces, over 50 restaurants and much more. Minnesota has more shore line than Florida,...

We Visit the Second Largest State Fair in the United States

We were camped in Minneapolis for two nights. One, RJ needed some time to catch up on work, and two, we needed a couple days to rest from being on the bike. Our first day in Minneapolis, RJ caught up on work and I did laundry at our KOA. After several loads of laundry, we went into town to a McDonald’s where we had better wifi. We were there the rest of the day. We had plans to go to the fair later in the afternoon but RJ got caught up with work so we were in McDonald’s till the very last possible second before we had to freaking race around trying to get to the fair in time. Around 9:30, we sped back to our campsite -about 5 miles- and grabbed our jackets before zooming over to the fairgrounds. The fair was open till midnight but they only give out tickets till 10pm. By the time we got through traffic and found a place to park, we were pushing 10pm. We made our way through...
