–Saturday, April 27–
We woke up with a start, RJ having remembered there was a time change half way through Kentucky and we needed to leave RIGHT NOW if we were going to make it to the capitol before it closed. We had less than a 30 minute buffer.
I scrambled around, stuffing everything into our saddle bags. We threw on our gear and made a bee line to Frankfort.
We made up time by taking the freeway, the fastest route, which is also the most boring but we had 20 minutes to spare by the time we screeched into the parking lot in Frankfort several hours later.
The capitol building was beautiful and void of anyone except the security guard and the receptionist.
We took a hurried little tour. The House and Senate doors were closed but we were able to peak in the windows.
There wasn’t a gift shop but the lady at the front desk told us to check out a chocolate store down the road that she thought would have coffee mugs. So off we went to the homemade chocolate store where we found my mug and of course, a few pieces of chocolate.
We Yelped a little diner right down the road from the chocolate shop where we got a bite to eat before driving to Charleston, West Virginia for the night. The great thing about the states on the eastern half, they hardly take any time to drive through so it always feels like we are making great time.
But before we could leave the state, RJ said he had to get Kentucky Fried Chicken in the state of Kentucky. I don’t why, I didn’t think it would taste any different than a KFC in another state but he had to say that he had KFC in Kentucky. Needless to say, RJ enjoyed his chicken from Kentucky and we were off to West Virginia.
We made it to the KOA pretty early in the evening and set up our tent in a light rain. Then we drove to a McDonald’s near by to blog and get work done.
